Since April 2024, the minimum income requirement for a spouse visa has risen from
£18,600 to £29,000 per annum. This will be increasing again by early next year.
What if I cannot meet the new income requirement?
Applicants may need to explore additional income sources or savings to fulfil the financial requirement. You do need to be careful when mixing different sources.
Can I include income from self-employment or other sources?
Yes, but it has to be for income from the same period.

For a successful Spouse or Civil Partner visa application, both individuals must be over 18 and fulfil the following criteria:
- The Spouse/Civil Partner must either be a British citizen or have settled status in the UK.
- Both partners must have met in person, be legally married or in a civil partnership, with evidence of a genuine and ongoing relationship.
- Must meet the necessary financial requirements, ensuring self-sufficiency in the UK without needing public funds. For employed applicants this stands at £29,000 per year. Different amount is needed for those who wish to rely on savings and other sources of income.
- Have the intention to permanently cohabit and possess adequate living arrangements.
- Satisfy the English language prerequisites – CEFR level A1 for initial applications and A2 for extensions.
